the important behind the scenes work before your session
As a seasoned Denver, Colorado family photographer, planning a family photo session can be an incredibly rewarding experience. But it does require a lot of work! There are many different factors to consider such as the location, the wardrobe and the editing. Taking the time to think through each of these components and making sure everything is planned out in advance will help ensure the session goes smoothly and the results are stunning!
I’d like to share the work on my end that helps us decide on a location.
research is key!
After our initial call which we discuss the type of location you desire, my work begins. I have been a Denver, Colorado family photographer for 12 years and certainly have my favorite locations. I always like to offer clients new locations depending on their desired aesthetic as well as their location in Denver. We will discuss options that are convenient to the client as well as any other considerations such as mobility issues for the client.
One of my favorite locations is Bluff Lake Nature Center.
This location is gorgeous in the summer and fall but has about 30 stairs that clients must navigate to get to the shooting area. This can be difficult for toddlers or older members of the family.
A week or two prior to our session, I spend time scouting various locations based on the clients’ requests. This involves visiting the locations at the exact time of the photo session to make sure the location has the right look as well as adequate and the appropriate lighting for my style of photography. Visiting locations also allows to me to see first-hand how crowded it may be during our session. (I typically do not like to photograph in a super popular location.)
I will then send a few cell phone images to the client to show them what it can look the the day of the session. This extra step helps ensure that we are all on the same page.
Another aspect of preparing the location is ensuring that all the proper permits are obtained. There are many areas in Denver that have no permit required, while others do. Obtaining a permit can require a few weeks of lead time as well as an additional fee.
Lastly, it’s important that I familiarize myself with the rules around the location. Some clients want to involve their furry friends however not all locations allow dogs or have strict leash rules.
I promise you that I do my absolute best to deliver gorgeous images of your loved ones and the proper research around the location is key to helping us have a successful session.
