Having a baby during the pandemic?

So 2020 isn’t actually going as planned for us is it?

I often think about the expectant moms during this time.  Pregnancy can be a scary time for many.  I can’t imagine what pregnant women are going through right now. Of course, many babies will continue be born during this crisis. But giving birth today looks drastically different than it did a few weeks ago.  Hospitals are severely limiting visitors and I have read of cases where the partner is not even allowed in the delivery room for safety reasons.

We all are missing out on so much during this time and it’s so disheartening. I am obviously no longer photographing newborns, families or seniors during this crisis (and our stay at home order in Colorado).  I miss it greatly and am trying to stay positive and busy with other photo projects.

For any that are due with a new little one during this time, please take comfort in knowing that your newborn session can wait.  When the time is right, we will still be able to capture gorgeous images of your baby.

I have always believed that the best time to photograph newborns is not necessarily within the first two weeks. It is my belief that the new mom should schedule the session when she is ready. Sometimes the newborn session is held when the baby is 5 days old, other times, when the baby is 5 weeks old.  If you are curious what a newborn session looks like for different ages, take a look at this post with corresponding images

Benefits of waiting weeks or months for your newborn session

If you are having a baby during the pandemic, (besides the obvious safety issues) there are other benefits of scheduling your newborn photo session a bit later than normal:

  • The new mom will have a chance to recover physically from the birth
  • The newborn swelling that is common will be less apparent
  • Most newborns experience skin dryness or blotchiness that typically resolves in the first few months
  • Waiting a few weeks or months for your session will allow your new family unit a chance to bond even more, helping to create more emotional images

When it is safe to do so, I will be back to photographing newborns and their strong families. Stay strong and be well.
